Sydney Park is undergoing a major transformation that will see the city’s biggest park become a vital asset for the growing communities of the southern districts of the city. Stanic Harding was engaged by JMD Design to design and implement new kiosk facilities and all access/baby change amenities to support the landscape upgrade for the City of Sydney. Our design, developed in conjunction with City Projects and JMD, proposed two 12x9m roofs that marked location in this section of the 44 hectare park and sheltered the architectural elements under. It was decided that the kiosk would be a simple rectangular cube and the two amenities cubicles would be cylinders. This allowed for an effective dialogue between the large roof plane over and the dynamic base of the landscape scheme. The timber lined undulating soffit of the steel framed roof inverts the topography of the park and creates a tension between the simple platonic objects under. The kiosk is clad in rigidized stainless steel panels and opens to the public via counterbalanced shutters. The cylinders, open at the top, are clad in a vertical ceramic tile and are stitched to the underside of the roof via fine stainless steel rods. Metal slots allow views out and a colorful interior provides engagement within.
